Aromatic

Aromatic Compounds (wiki)

Typically built around a benzene, and cyclically conjugated. Aromatic is now a misnomer and has name from historical use. Properties:

  • Typically unreaactive
  • non polar and hydrophobic
  • high carbon-hydrogen ratios
  • burn with a sooty yellow flame
  • can undergo electrophilic substitution reactions and nucleophilic aromatic substitutions Broken into two categories: 1) Benzene ring modelled 2) non-benzoids
